Goshen Township, Ohio

Goshen Township Police & Fire/EMS Departments

Safety Services Levy Comes up Short

Goshen Township voters decided against a 4.5 mill levy on Tuesday. Their decision means the loss of several full time police officers and firefighters. It also blocks the upgrade of Fire/EMS equipment that in some cases is nearing 20 years old.

591 voters were in favor of the additional tax, while 757 were against it. That is a split of just 166 votes.

T.J. Corcoran, Chairman of the Township Board of Trustees, issued this statement:

"As trustees, we were elected to represent the residents of Goshen, and the majority has decided that Goshen cannot afford this levy at this time.  We must respect our resident's decision.  The trustees will now be facing some tough decisions as cuts in personnel are necessary. The bottom line is, people are going to lose jobs, and our Township's fire and police departments will be weakened. However, Goshen Township will work through this latest obstacle with grace and sensitive attention to our current financial situation. All of our police officers and firefighters serve this Township with dignity, and it will be a difficult decision to determine which specific steps must be taken to protect jobs, residents, and the financial stability of our Township."
