| Free Mammogram Program A Success!
Just under 30 women were screened for breast cancer on July 11th at the Goshen Government Center.
Family Cancer Care brought the mobile mammography van to the township offering free mammograms to any woman over 40 who had not had a mammogram in the past 12 months. Their results will be ready in about 2 and a half weeks.
Mammography Project Director Nyota Stoker said the project is a great benefit to women who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford a mammogram. That important, since breast cancer survival rates are in the 90's when detected early by means of a mammogram.
The mammograms were able to be offered without cost thanks to a grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the world's largest grassroots operation to fight breast cancer. The same group is responsible for the pink ribbon drive every October.
In 2008, it is estimated that 182,460 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States. An estimated 40,480 women will die from breast cancer. Mammograms can detect breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable phases.
Last year more than 700 women were screened through Cancer Family Care's free mobile mammography program.
