Senate Clears the Way to Clear Ohio Roads of Drunk Drivers
Senate Bill 17 passed into Ohio Law in September of 2008, and recently Goshen Township Officer Keith Clonch became the first officer in Clermont County to utilize the new law.
The new law allows police officers to force suspected OVI offenders to provide a blood sample if they refuse to provide a urine sample or submit to a breathalyzer test at the officer's request. The bill is aimed specifically at repeat OVI offenders and has already been used twice in Goshen Township since September.
"With the recent increase in OVI related crashes and fatalities in Goshen Township, we hope that this new tool will help deter instances of drinking and driving, "Officer Keith Clonch said, " but for those who continue to ignore warnings and get behind the wheel after drinking or using drugs, Goshen Township Police will find you and we will use this new tool to obtain evidence."
The Clermont County Prosecutor's Office, Clermont Mercy Hospital, and Clermont County Law Enforcement Agencies are all working together to help make the transition to the new law and process as smooth as possible.
