Chief Ray Snyder Awarded High Honor

Goshen Township Police Chief Ray Snyder was honored last night at the 25th annual Police Appreciation Banquet. He recently found out he was named this year's recipient of the " Colonel Paul Ferrara Distinguished Law Enforcement Service Award."  Snyder says he was shocked with the announcement, and even more surprised when he found out who nominated him.

"It's very gratifying to know it came from the 'troops'," Snyder says, "It's really great coming from them. It means more to me than anything." Members of Snyder's own department teamed up to write the letter to the Clermont County Citizens Law Enforcement Association.

"I just knew he'd get it, because he deserves it. He's just not like anyone else," said police clerk Deborah Britt. Tears came to her eyes as she talked about her boss, telling about how he goes above and beyond, and that his concern for his employees doesn't stop when his "troops", as he calls them, clock out for the day.

Snyder talked about his staff, "These guys… every day, every year, they prop me and the trustees up and make us look good- and that's a fact. They do what has to be done every single time. That's amazing to me."

Snyder got his first taste of law enforcement from his father, who served as the Chief of Police for neighboring Miami Township for many years. "It'd never fly now, but I can remember being 15 years old and riding with my dad on the job on weekends, and thinking what a great way to make a living." Snyder said. He followed his childhood dream into the police academy, and graduated in 1981. He's been serving the people of Goshen Township ever since. "Goshen is what home should have been," Snyder said, "people here are great, and they've always treated me great. It's an honor and a privilege working here."

Snyder has achieved many other awards and recognition during his carreer. In 1991, Snyder was the co-recipient of an award from the Clermont County Bar Association for "Best Overall Investigation Leading to the Solution of a Crime". Ray was also honored with an award from that organization in 1987 for "Significant Improvements in Police Operations", and again in 1994 for "Superior Achievement in Police Leadership." He received the "Community Builder" award from the Goshen Masonic Lodge in the year 2000. In the Clermont County Chamber of Commerce recognized him for Contribution of Plans and Ideas for improvements in Police Operations.A year later the Ohio Senate gave him Police Appreciation and Achievement Award. The Ohio House of Representatives awarded him the Law Enforcement Excellence Award in 1993.
